A BLAST FROM THE PAST ON VIRTUAL REALITY!
I just had to share this video quickly as a subtle reminder as to how any new tech’s success relies so heavily on consumer uptake and D2C marketing.
This ‘charming’ video from the 90’s about Virtual Reality, what it is and how it will transform our lives looks so ‘quaint’ now just 10-15 years on! Why didn’t it take on back then like it’s doing now?
Probably because of the hugely expensive and cumbersome kit you needed just to view it, compared to sleek style and easy online ordering for Samsung Gear VR or even parting with a few quid for Google Cardboard, just to see what the fuss is about. Adoption has been simplified so much to help increase consumer appeal and purchasing of VR content.
I’m still a bit of a cynic when it comes to VR. History shows us that when a new digital media requires physical partner of some kind (normally in the form of hardware), it often has difficulties reaching the mass market because we live in a society of instant gratification! If we’re tempted by a bit of VR content on the fly – we’ll probably have forgotten what we bought the glasses for by the time they arrive though the post!
